How Much Money Do You Need to Travel to Spain? (Budget Guide 2026)

gran via street madrid spain

Spain in 2026 is not the same as it was twenty years ago.

The cost of accommodation has increased significantly, and eating out is no longer as cheap as it once was. However, from my point of view, quality has also improved a lot in recent years. There has been a clear leap in standards: especially in food, hospitality, and overall travel experience.

That said, Spain is still a country for every budget.

You can find everything from exclusive destinations with luxury resorts and highly curated boutique hotels, to much more affordable places with a wide range of prices (including restaurants where you can enjoy a good meal for less than you might expect).

Average Daily Budget in Spain

To give you a general idea, here’s what you can expect to spend per day:

  • Budget travel: €50–80
  • Mid-range travel: €80–150
  • Comfort / high-end travel: €150–250+

What you get within each range can vary a lot depending on how you travel — so let’s break it down.

🍽️ Food: How to Eat Well Without Spending Too Much

Food is one of the highlights of traveling in Spain -and also one of the areas where you can easily adjust your budget-.

💸 Budget-friendly options

  • Tapas, pinchos, and raciones: perfect for sharing and saving money
  • Many local bars still offer generous portions at reasonable prices
  • Menú del día: one of the best-kept secrets
    • Usually includes starter, main course, dessert, bread, and drink
    • Homemade food, very local, and excellent value

👉 Tip: search on Google Maps for “menú del día” wherever you are

Another great option:

  • Bakeries often sell things like empanadas (savory pastry filled with meat, vegetables, or fish), which can easily replace a full meal
  • Small fruit and grocery shops are everywhere and very affordable

🍴 Mid-range options

  • Restaurants with more variety and slightly higher quality
  • Apps like TheFork often offer discounts in very good restaurants

✨ High-end experiences

If you want to treat yourself:

👉 From creative cuisine to traditional fine dining, the level is very high

🚆 Transport: From Budget to High-Speed Comfort

Getting around Spain is relatively easy, and one of its strengths is the variety of transport options available: from very affordable to fast and comfortable.

💸 Budget options

  • BlaBlaCar: very popular in Spain and widely used
    • It allows you to share rides with locals traveling between cities
    • A great option if you want to save money and have a more local experience
  • Buses are one of the most affordable ways to travel across Spain
    • Companies like ALSA, Avanza or Movelia cover a huge number of routes, including smaller towns
    • They are reliable, comfortable, and often cheaper than trains

👉 If you are traveling on a budget, buses are often the best option

🚄 Mid to high range

  • Train travel in Spain is efficient and well-developed
  • High-speed trains connect major cities quickly and comfortably

In recent years, the market has expanded beyond Renfe, with companies like OUIGO and Iryo offering more competitive prices

👉 This has made high-speed travel more accessible than ever

  • Renfe also operates different types of high-speed and long-distance services (including AVE), as well as medium-distance and regional trains

👉 These connections are often more affordable and allow you to reach smaller cities and less touristy areas

✈️ Flights

  • Domestic flights are available but usually more expensive
  • Prices can vary significantly depending on the season and how early you book

👉 For long distances (for example mainland Spain to the Canary Islands), flying is often the most practical option

⚠️ Seasonal Prices (Very Important)

Be careful with peak seasons.

Destinations like:

  • Canary Islands
  • Balearic Islands
  • Andalusia in summer

👉 can become very expensive if you don’t book in advance

🧭 Final Thoughts

Spain is no longer the ultra-cheap destination it once was, but it offers something even better: quality, diversity, and experiences for every type of traveler.

Whether you’re on a tight budget or looking for a more refined trip, it’s perfectly possible to adapt your travel style and still enjoy everything the country has to offer.
